If you can't take the heat............. use the crock pot!

Summertime !!      For most people this is the time to haul the grill out of the garage or shed, but in Aiken we can cook out ALL YEAR LONG!!       I love to use the crock pot this time of year, too.   It's hot enough outside, who wants to heat up the kitchen even more.

And if your house is for sale, and you have a showing appointment that day, the house will smell great with something cooking in the crock pot!!     Remember the way you used to come home from school and smell something lovely before you even got into the front door :)   I do.   Mmmmm  mmmm  good!

My favorite crock pot dish is a pork chop recipe.

I don't know the exacts.... like most cooks, but it is easy enough that you can't go wrong!

First -  I buy some THICK CENTER CUT PORK CHOPS.   (I prefer boneless, but you can go with bones if you want)

Second -  I put the pork chops into the crock pot.  (my mom used to brown them first, but they taste EXACTLY   the  same without doing it - so I don't bother with that step, lol)   Sprinkle with a little seasoning salt. Just a little.  With crock pot cooking it is best to season AFTER you are FINISHED cooking!)

Third - Open a can of Chicken & Stars Soup (yummy!!)  and just pour it over the pork chops.    (sometimes I add a little bit of water - maybe 1/2 a can or so, depending on how many pork chops I use)    I am cooking for 1 - 2, so if you are cooking for more - you should probably use another can of soup.         I've used Chicken & Rice soup, too -  -but the Stars are better :).

Fourth -   Cook for about an hour or so on medium....then turn down to low and cook another 6-7 hours.

Last but not least -  Serve with a nice tossed salad, and don't forget a veggie to round out your meal :)

Enjoy.

just like a broken record...record...record..record...

I was just checking our 10 day weather forecast.   Every single day has the same - exactly the same - weather forecast.

For the next 10 days in the Aiken/Augusta area, we can expect:

Partly cloudy with a chance of mainly afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Lows in the lower 70s. Highs in the lower 90s. Chance of rain 30 percent.

Think we're gonna get some rain?                              rainbow

Pool Safety

I know I won't be getting any points for this post, but some things are just more important than points. Have a fun AND safe Summer season!
Pool Safety - Tips to Keeping Your Family Safe

Do you have a pool in your backyard? Are you thinking about building one? If so, you know just how fun this can be. While pools are enjoyable, if the proper precautions are not in place you may be asking for trouble. It is crucial to make sure you have all the essential items especially if you are going to have small children in the area. For this reason, it is very important to exercise the proper level of pool safety. Not being careful in this area could lead to disaster in the long run. So what are some of the more common pool safety items that you need to be aware of? The following bullets outline some of the common pool safety items you should purchase.

Pool Alarms
First and foremost, you may want to look into purchasing a swimming pool alarm. The great thing about one of these is that you can prevent problems before they ever occur. There are many different types of alarms to choose from. They include: door alarms, perimeter alarms, and wave sensor alarms among others. Weigh the pros and cons of each before buying.

Pool Life Savers
Moving on, pool life savers are also very important. In most cases, one of these will be just fine. But if you want to play it safe, look into buying a few. After all, it is better to be safe than sorry. Make sure that you purchase high quality life savers, and that you check them approximately once a month to ensure that you know where they are and that they are in good working condition.

Pool Fences
Keeping intruders and children out of the pool is important. Many states have laws to regulate pools and require a fence be installed properly around your pool. Vinyl construction is usually preferred and maintenance free. Make sure the fence you purchase is UV Protected especially if your pool is located in a sunny location. Check the fence to make sure there are no gaps. Many kits have clear installation directions and it is crucial to follow the directions and make sure to keep your warranty in a handy place for future reference!

Pool Liners
Covering your pool during the offseason is a practice that has become more and more common over the past years.

Test Kits
Every hour at our local pool, the lifeguards mandate that every swimmer retreat from the water. They sit at the edge and pull out a test kit to check the levels of chlorine in the pool. This is a practice that is mandated every hour to ensure our safety. While a home owner may not have to test their pool every hour, it is extremely important to check levels using the proper equipment on your home pool before allowing people to swim in your pool or your hot tub. Many new Test kits exist to give you clear accurate results in seconds.

When it comes to pool safety equipment, there are many items that you can purchase. Having a swimming pool can bring a lot of fun to your home; not to mention the fact that it will increase your property's market value, but please make sure you have all the necessary items to ensure safety for all who enjoy your pool!

let it rain, let it rain

I was at a little get together this evening when the skies opened up.   Everyone was as happy as could be that it was finally raining.

It did not 'dampen' any spirits at all...in fact, just the opposite.

Why was everyone so happy to have the rain?

Well,....... these are horsepeople...

and they need the rain  raindrops falling on the street

                                                                 ... to grow the hay

                                                    hayfield

... to feed the horses!     running horses

Oh, and the horses were enjoying the rain, too - they were running around all excited in their paddocks.   Playing in the rain like children :)

Hope you had a chance to get to the river to see the fireworks.  It was a great fireworks show :)     The food wasn't bad, either, haha.

Good night - and Happy Fourth of July.

Go Fly a Kite!!

"Go fly a kite" she said.  I could hardly believe my ears.  I had to ask ‘Pardon?'........and she told me again.   ‘Go fly a kite.'     Well, after I thought about it for awhile, I came to the conclusion that this might actually be a great idea!  It is relaxing, refreshing, and you don't have to break the bank to do it.

Maybe you don't have the ‘fun money' that you had last summer.   Summertime fun doesn't have to be expensive.  Here are some low-cost ideas:

Make something grow!    Grow plants or flowers from seeds.   It is fun to watch things grow.     Get adventurous - - -  grow some herbs to use with your favorite recipes!

                                                   sunflower

Take a hike!  Wander the trails.....maybe stumble upon a waterfall.  Enjoy nature.

Go fly a kite!  fly a kite  Remember how to make a kite from some paper, sticks and string?  The good old days.   The only other thing you need is a breeze.  Other than that, it doesn't take much athletic ability to fly a kite, haha.

Take a picture...it lasts longer!      Pick up the camera.... And go out hunting!  Anything that catches your eye.  Maybe some interesting architectural details on a historic house downtown, smiling faces, flowers.....anything!!   Have fun with the settings on the camera.  You know - the ones you never use, haha.  See what happens! The kids might enjoy making a summer photo journal.

How about a campout!   Even if it is in the backyard it is still a lot of fun.  Don't forget the SMORE'S!!

                                                                              camping out

Party time!   Summer time is the perfect time for all those small town/ big city festivals.  Check the towns around your area, you'd be surprised at what fun they have going on! Some are celebrating food!!  My fav is the fried green tomato festival.  Yummy J   Others celebrate music, history, heritage,...etc..

Go jump in the lake!   Or the pool, or the ocean... Have fun getting your splash on.

Barefoot in the park!   Plan a picnic with someone special.  Don't forget the adult beverages, haha.   Enjoy each others company in the shade of an old oak tree.  Lounge around - - watch the clouds float by - relax....

To the moon, Alice!    stars in the sky

Lie back on the cool grass....and gaze skyward.   How long has it been since you've looked up at the stars.    Remember all the deep discussions we used to have while gazing at the stars with our buddies.  Of course, my favorite place to stargaze is from a blanket on the beach.   For those of you living in larger cities...you may have to go to the outskirts, where the lights aren't so bright, to get a good look at the summer skies.

Go for it!!

Enjoy your summer
