We might be Thoroughbred Country....but we're more than horses :)

Yes,  this part of South Carolina is called 'Thoroughbred Country'.    (Aiken - Allendale - Bamberg and Barnwell Counties)     While the horse is a big part of our lifestyle, we are more than horses, haha.

History Buffs - - - did you know?... this area was known for raising thoroughbred horses after the Revolutionary War...and has been popular for some time with thoroughbred racing fanatics

                                                                                       revolutionary war image
Train guys....did you know? .... many communities developed along the railway.  Charleston-Hamburg Railway to be exact.     This was the FIRST commercial railway in America....and the LONGEST commercial railway IN THE WORLD at that time!

More history stuff!!.....  Thoroughbred Country claims both Revolutionary AND Civil War battle sites - grave sites - occupied homes and churches.

Do you like to party?...  Just a few of the regions festivals:

Salley Chitlin' Strut:  yes, Chitlins.    While I don't care too much for them, they are a delicacy - come out and give it a try!    Even better is the DANCE --- The Chitlin Strut :)    There is other stuff to eat besides Chitlins - but that is the main attraction :)

Allendale Cooter Fest:  it's turtles!  A block party celebration every summer.  Turtles race for BIG prize money!  Food - fun - games - music - come on down and have a good time!

 turtle jumping

Aiken Lobster Race:  yup, lobsters, haha.  These guys have been training  - all for this big race.  Annual event - the Friday evening before The Kentucky Derby.   Block party festival... food - fun - music.....

so many more festivals....... Fried Green Tomato Festival .....Blackville Old Time Horse Farmers Gathering....Ehrhardt Schuetzenfest (celebrating the area's German heritage)... Ridge Peach festival... Herb Fair...Bluegrass Festival........Battle of Aiken (Civil War re-enactment).....

Do you like to eat?...  try some of these:   grits  (I like mine with butter and cheese), barbecue, black-eyed peas, collard greens, sweet potatoes, PEACHES, pecans, boiled peanuts (yes...boiled peanuts), sweet tea, okra.....come enjoy some great Southern home cooking :)

I was not aware of your area also being referred to as thoroughbred country. Thanks for the education.
